Susan Boyle is an inspiration

susan_boyle_audition1You may have seen this YouTube video, but watch it again.  Susan Boyle, frumpy, unemployed, 47-year old church worker is the new media darling from Britain’s version of American Idol, called Britain’s Got Talent.

Unfortunately, YouTube has deactivated the embed feature for all of these videos, but click on the link here and watch it for the first time, or again.  Susan gives a stunning, surprising, and heartfelt performance.  Even Simon loved her.  What a wonderful story in this age of media cynicism.

  1. Hi,
Just stopped by while looking for something else,
good to see you publicising Susan Boyle.

One minor issue though – ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ is NOT our version of American Idol…

American Idol debuted in 2002. It was a spin-off from the original Pop Idol which debuted in the UK in 2001. The format was originated by Simon FULLER.

Simon COWELL then came up with (the admittedly fairly similar format) The X Factor which is also franchised around the world (though not to the US, presumably because of the success of American Idol).

Simon COWELL has also originated a different format, the ‘Got Talent’ series, which was due to start with Britain’s Got Talent in 2005. This was postponed, so America’s Got Talent was the first series in 2006, followed by Britain’s Got Talent in 2007. The format is not restricted to singing/performing songs as in Idol and X Factor, but is a variety show format – dancers, magicians, ventriloquists, singers, strongman acts…

Sorry, that turned into a bit of a rant… anyway, keep on blogging!
