The barn vs. the field

Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few.  Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.” — Matthew 9:37-38 NIV

It occurred to me the other day that the difference in the church of modernity and a missional church is this:  the modern church is all about the barn while the missional church is all about the field.  It’s interesting that Jesus doesn’t refer to God as “Lord of the barn.”  God is “Lord of the harvest” and it’s his harvest field.  God’s focus is on the field and the harvest.  The harvest is plentiful.  All we, the workers, have to do is get out of the barn!
